As a parent, you want more than just another activity to fill your child’s week. You want something that builds real confidence, teaches respect and helps them handle challenges in a healthy way.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does all of that. It is a practical martial art that teaches children how to move, think and stay calm under pressure, while they have fun and make friends.
This guide explains how Jiu-Jitsu helps kids on the Northern Beaches, what makes the kids program at Pacheco Jiu-Jitsu different, and why so many families in Warriewood, Narrabeen and surrounding suburbs choose it as a long term activity for their children.
The Core Benefits Of BJJ For Kids
Physical: Coordination, Strength And Healthy Habits
Kids today spend a lot of time sitting. Jiu-Jitsu gives them a reason to move.
On the mats they will:
- Run, roll and balance in different directions
- Build strength through bodyweight movements
- Develop coordination with drills that link hands, feet and core
- Improve flexibility and body awareness
Classes mix games and technique so children stay engaged while they are getting fitter. Over time they learn that moving their body regularly is part of a normal, healthy life.
Mental: Problem Solving, Focus And Discipline
Jiu-Jitsu is like a moving puzzle. Kids are constantly asking themselves questions such as:
- How do I escape from here
- What happens if I move my hips this way
- Which grip works best in this position
This builds problem solving skills and focus. To improve, children need to listen carefully to the coach, follow steps in the right order and keep trying when a technique does not work the first time.
Discipline grows naturally from:
- Lining up at the start and end of class
- Showing respect to coaches and training partners
- Turning up regularly, even when they feel a bit tired
These habits support them at school and at home as well.
Emotional: Resilience, Confidence And Humility
On the mats, kids experience both success and struggle in a safe environment. They tap, reset and try again many times each class.
This helps them develop:
- Resilience
They learn that it is OK to be in a tough position, to tap and to come back stronger next round. - Confidence
As they master techniques and see their progress, they start to trust themselves. This confidence shows up in the classroom, the playground and everyday life. - Humility
Jiu-Jitsu teaches children that there is always something new to learn. They learn to win with respect, lose with grace and value effort over ego.
Bully Proofing Your Child: The Jiu-Jitsu Way
Parents often ask if Jiu-Jitsu will help their child deal with bullying. The answer is yes, but not in the way people sometimes expect.
Control And Technique, Not Aggression
Jiu-Jitsu focuses on control, not striking.
Children learn how to:
- Stay calm when someone is grabbing or pushing
- Control distance so they are harder to grab
- Escape from holds and unsafe positions
- Use leverage rather than strength
Because there is no punching or kicking in standard training, kids learn to manage contact in a controlled way. This gives them real options if they ever need to defend themselves without causing unnecessary harm.
De-escalation And Self Confidence As Deterrents
Good self defence starts long before any physical technique.
Through training, kids develop:
- Stronger posture and body language
- The confidence to speak up and ask for help
- A better sense of when to walk away
Bullies usually look for easy targets. A child who carries themselves with confidence, has friends on the mats and knows they can handle pressure is less likely to be picked on.
At Pacheco Jiu-Jitsu we always teach that physical techniques are a last resort. Respect and de-escalation come first.
Our Kids Program At Pacheco Jiu-Jitsu
Pacheco Jiu-Jitsu is a family run academy on the Northern Beaches, with gyms in Warriewood, Narraweena and Avalon. Our kids program balances discipline with fun and kindness, giving children a safe and supportive place to grow.
A Safe, Fun And Supportive Environment
In our kids classes we:
- Separate groups by age and level
- Keep a close coach-to-student ratio
- Match new or shy children with patient partners
- Reward effort, focus and good behaviour, not just who wins a round
- Maintain clear rules for safety and respect on the mats
Parents are welcome to talk to coaches about their child’s personality, any worries and what they hope to see from training.
Our Curriculum For Different Age Groups
Our curriculum grows with your child. While exact ages and class names may change over time, the structure usually looks like this:
- Younger kids
Lots of movement games, basic positions and learning how to fall and roll safely. The focus is on listening, coordination and having fun while learning simple Jiu-Jitsu concepts. - Older kids
More detailed techniques, partner drills, controlled positional rounds and a stronger focus on responsibility, respect and helping newer students. - Teens
A bridge between kids and adult training, with more advanced techniques, fitness work and deeper talks about mindset, discipline and resilience.
Throughout all age groups, the core remains the same: family, humility and respect.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu FAQ
What age can my child start Jiu-Jitsu at Pacheco Jiu-Jitsu?
We run kids Jiu-Jitsu classes for primary school ages through to teens, with groups separated by age and experience. If you are not sure which class is right for your child, get in touch and we will recommend the best option for their age and confidence level.
Do we need a gi for the first kids Jiu-Jitsu classes?
No. For the trial and first few kids classes, comfortable clothes are enough, such as a fitted t-shirt and shorts or leggings without zips. If your child chooses to continue, we will explain what gi to buy and the best time to get it.
Does my child need to be sporty to enjoy Jiu-Jitsu?
Not at all. Many kids who do not love traditional team sports enjoy Jiu-Jitsu because it feels like games, puzzles and movement all in one. Coordination, strength and fitness improve naturally over time as they keep coming to class.
Will learning Jiu-Jitsu make my child more aggressive?
No. Kids Jiu-Jitsu at Pacheco is about control, respect and calm decision making, not aggression. Children learn how to train safely with partners, tap early and look after each other. We always teach de-escalation, using their voice and asking for help before any physical response.
How does Jiu-Jitsu help with bullying at school?
Jiu-Jitsu helps bully proof kids by building confidence, strong body language and the ability to stay calmer under pressure. They also learn realistic ways to escape holds and create space if they ever need to. Knowing they can protect themselves often means they are less likely to be targeted. We talk a lot about when to walk away and when to seek help from an adult.
Where are your kids Jiu-Jitsu classes held on the Northern Beaches?
Pacheco Jiu-Jitsu has gyms in Warriewood, Narraweena and Avalon on the Northern Beaches, close to Narrabeen and surrounding suburbs. Many families choose us as an after school activity for kids in Narrabeen, Warriewood, Mona Vale and nearby areas.
What if my child is shy, anxious or very energetic?
We work with all kinds of kids. Shy or anxious children are introduced gently and matched with kind partners. Very energetic kids are given clear structure so they can channel that energy in a positive way. If you tell the coach a little about your child before class, we can support them from the first session.
