As a parent, you are not just looking for something to fill the after school hours. You want an activity that helps your child grow physically, mentally, and emotionally, while they enjoy it and feel supported.
At Pacheco Jiu Jitsu Youth Academy in Narraweena, kids train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a structured, positive environment that builds confidence without arrogance, discipline without fear, and resilience without aggression.
This guide explains what kids learn through Jiu-Jitsu, why it works so well for children on the Northern Beaches, and what families can expect from training at our Narraweena academy.
Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Works So Well for Kids
Physical Development: Movement, Coordination and Healthy Habits
Many kids spend a lot of time sitting and screen based. Jiu-Jitsu gets them moving in a way that feels like play, while still building real athletic skills.
In class, kids learn to:
- move in all directions through rolling, crawling, balancing, and stepping patterns
- build strength using their own bodyweight
- improve coordination by linking hands, feet, and core
- develop flexibility, balance, and body awareness safely
Because classes blend structured drills with age-appropriate games, kids stay engaged while improving their fitness. Over time, movement becomes a normal habit, not something they have to be forced into.
Mental Growth: Focus, Problem Solving and Discipline
Jiu-Jitsu is often called “physical chess” because every position requires decisions. Kids learn to think, adapt, and stay calm when things do not go their way.
They start to ask:
- how do I get out of this position
- what happens if I move this way instead
- what is the safest option right now
Progress comes from listening, following steps, and trying again when something feels hard. That repetition builds focus and perseverance.
Discipline develops naturally through:
- clear class routines and boundaries
- respect for coaches and training partners
- showing up consistently and giving honest effort
These habits carry into school, home, and other sports.
Emotional Strength: Confidence, Resilience and Humility
On the mats, kids experience challenge in a safe environment. They get stuck, reset, and try again many times in a single class. That is where emotional strength is built.
This helps them develop:
- Resilience
Kids learn that being stuck is not failure. They tap, learn, and continue. - Confidence
As skills improve, children trust themselves more, and that confidence shows up at school and in social situations. - Humility
Jiu-Jitsu teaches kids they are never “finished”. They learn to win with respect, stay calm with setbacks, and value effort over ego.
Bullying and Self-Defence: The Jiu-Jitsu Approach
Many parents ask whether Jiu-Jitsu helps with bullying. The answer is yes, but not because we teach kids to fight.
Control and Safety, Not Aggression
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on control and escape skills rather than punching or kicking.
Kids learn how to:
- stay calm if someone grabs or pushes
- keep balance and manage distance
- escape common holds safely
- use leverage rather than strength
This gives children practical options without encouraging harm or escalation.
Confidence and De-escalation Come First
The most effective self-defence is prevention. Kids who train regularly often carry themselves differently. They look more confident, they speak more clearly, and they stay calmer under pressure.
Training develops:
- stronger posture and body language
- confidence to speak up and ask for help
- better judgement about when to walk away
At Pacheco Jiu Jitsu Youth Academy, we are clear that physical techniques are a last resort. Respect, communication, and de-escalation come first.

Jiu-Jitsu is a long-term skill. The way we teach evolves as kids grow.
- Younger kids
Movement, coordination, listening skills, and basic Jiu-Jitsu concepts through drills and games. - Older kids
More structured technique learning, partner work, and controlled positional training, with a stronger focus on responsibility and teamwork. - Teens
A bridge into adult training, with more advanced skills, conditioning, and deeper conversations about mindset, discipline, and consistency.
Across all ages, the values stay the same: family, respect, humility, and consistency.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu FAQ
What age can my child start?
We offer kids classes from primary school age through to teens, with groups separated by age and experience.
Does my child need a gi to start?
No. For the trial and first few classes, comfortable training clothes are enough. We will help you choose a gi later if your child continues.
My child is not sporty. Will they enjoy it?
Yes. Many kids who do not enjoy traditional team sports thrive in Jiu-Jitsu because it feels like problem solving through movement.
Will Jiu-Jitsu make my child aggressive?
No. Our program emphasises control, respect, and calm decision making. Aggression is not encouraged or rewarded.
How does Jiu-Jitsu help with bullying?
It builds confidence, awareness, and emotional control. Kids also learn practical ways to escape unsafe situations if needed, but we focus heavily on prevention and communication.
What if my child is shy or very energetic?
We work with all personalities. Shy kids are introduced gently, and energetic kids are given structure. If you tell us beforehand, we can support them from day one.
